Pros and Cons of Playing Video Games

Assalammualaikum and hello readers, today I would like to talk about the pros and the cons of playing video games. Ever wonder why people keep telling you to stop playing games? Especially for kids, how many times a day does your parents keep telling you to put down your controller and read a book? As a gamer, I have to say that games can be quite fun and I do sometimes have to be told to stop playing several times before I actually stop. If you are only reading this for my opinions, there are still some more to follow but if you want to read a debate of the pros and cons of gaming between me and me, read on.

Gaming always has its advantages. Take the game “Trauma Center or Surgeon Simulator” for example. It’s a game about surgeries and operations and it improves every part of your body that a game could give. First its just tutorials and simple operations where you fix cuts and normal diseases but as you progress further into the game it requires and improves hand-eye coordination, reaction speed, problem solving and memory; all of which you will need to tackle the mysterious strain of virus. But of course this is rarely played by gamers so lets use a more widely spread game such as Call of Duty: Advance Warfare. An FPS game would also improve certain skills you get such as creating tactics, your reaction speed, eye sharpness and hand-eye coordination. There are also another group of games that involves physical activity such as the Wii Fit but it uses the term “game” quite loosely.

Now moving on to the cons. Gaming has an indirect, but depending on the severity potential disadvantage. This disadvantage is not eye disease, its not radiation poisoning but its as simple as addiction. This is usually kept in check but sometimes there are reports of some kid somewhere playing for a week without sleeping, drinking or eating. Another con is that video games uses screens. According to some researcher, they said screens can wreck your eyes with prolonged exposure. Also some violent games might influence little kids that are not mature yet and are easily swayed by new ideas although this problem is mostly fixed if the age rating is read and followed.

In conclusion, games are made for entertainment which is a good thing and as mentioned before, games also have lots of pros. For example, games allow us to develop our motor skills. Some games allow us to develop our mental aptitude. Although there are cons to games, there are cons to everything electronic: power consumption, eye degradation, addiction and the list goes on. Those other activities can be plainly watching the TV, which also ruins your eyes with none of the good stuff games bring to you.
